Obituary of Marie B Doherty

Marie B. Doherty, aged 96, peacefully passed away on May 29, 2024, in the village of New Gretna within Bass River Township, New Jersey. She was born on January 17, 1928, in Pleasantville, New Jersey, to her loving parents, Sylvester Bishop and Irene McAnney. Marie’s life journey took her through various cities, including Collingswood, Bass River, Audubon and Philadelphia. Throughout her years, she touched the lives of many and left an indelible mark on those who had the pleasure of knowing her. Marie was a remarkable individual who excelled in her education. She attended Collingsworth High School and later pursued higher education at the prestigious, University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated with distinction. Her academic achievements were a testament to her dedication and thirst for knowledge. Aside from her academic pursuits, Marie also served various institutions during her remarkable career. She began her professional journey at the Dairy Lab in Philadelphia working part time at age 13. Her passion for chemistry led her to the University of Pennsylvania, where she continued her education in the field as their first woman chemistry major. She worked for the Army Materials Lab, as a Chemist, assisting on early experiments with the manufacture of fiberglass for the insulation in space suits. Also, her work was noted in a paper published in the Journal of Chemistry. Marie’s knowledge and desire to make a difference led her to Audubon High School, where she served as a Substitute Teacher. However, her most cherished role was that of a dedicated Homemaker, caring for her loved ones and creating a warm and loving home. In her free time, Marie had a variety of hobbies that brought her joy. She had a green thumb and enjoyed flower gardening. Additionally, she found solace in shopping, bike riding, boating, camping, walking, and traveling. Marie’s zest for life was evident in her adventurous spirit and her ability to find joy in the simplest of moments. Marie was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of New Gretna, where she found spiritual support and guidance. Her commitment to her faith was unwavering and provided her strength throughout her life. Marie was predeceased by her loving husband, Ernest F. Doherty, and her son, John A. Doherty. She is survived by her devoted sons, Thomas Doherty of Bass River, NJ, David Doherty of Litchfield, NH, and Robert Doherty of Pemberton, NJ. Marie’s legacy also lives on through her beloved grandson, Robert Doherty Jr. of Newport News, VA. Marie will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all those who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her warm smile, kind heart, and infectious laughter will forever be etched in our memories. A memorial service to honor and celebrate Marie’s life will take place at First Presbyterian Church of New Gretna.
